Wyoming was organized as territory in May 19, 1869, and entered the Union on July 10, 1890 as the 44th state. Earlier, the U.S. acquired the land which makes up Wyoming from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The name "Wyoming" originates from the Delaware Indian word, meaning "mountains and valleys alternating"; In total and area, the state covers 97,100 sq. miles. Wyoming is notable for huge landscape features, including tall mountains and wide open plains, that provide grazing lands for sheep and cattle, and rich mineral deposits. Mining, particularly the energy production of oil and natural gas, is the state's leading industry. Agriculture production includes crops such as wheat, oats, sugar beets, corn, barley, and alfalfa.
