Arizona, known as "Grand Canyon State", was the 48th state to join the U.S. in 1912. Bordered by New Mexico on the East side, California and Nevada to the West, and Colorado to the north, Arizona also shares a border with Mexico. The state's name comes from the word arizonac, originating from two Papago Indian words meaning "place of the young spring." Phoenix is the largest city in Arizona, a state with over 114,006 square miles of land. The population from Census 2000 was 5,130,632 making Arizona the 20th most populous state in the US. Much of Arizona is desert and mountain terrain, with mining of metals such as gold and copper as leading industries. Major Lakes include Lake Mead, Lake Havasu, Lake Mohave, Theodore Roosevelt Lake, San Carlos Lake, Lake Powell.
